Introducing Optex (and a Dfinity Foundation Grant)

ClinTex are very proud to announce that we have been awarded a development grant by the Dfinity Foundation.

ClinTex are very happy and excited to be working with Dfinity as they re-imagine how software and the internet works through smart contracts on ICP.

The Dfinity grant will go towards funding Optex — a brand new app from ClinTex which will be built based entirely on the Internet Computer (ICP) and will serve as the visualization layer for Clinical Trials Intelligence.

What is Optex?

Optex is a powerful data visualisation tool designed to provide seamless insights into complex data.

The Optex project mission is to allow any organisation, business or data analyst to easily transform their data into powerful visual analytics, allowing for faster data analysis leading to quicker, more confident, and accurate decision-making.

Completely open source, Optex is not limited to any one data specific use case and will be an extremely valuable tool across any industry or application that requires powerful visualisations for their platform, D’app or data source.

The first integration of Optex will be with Clinical Trials Intelligence, as we at ClinTex will utilise Optex for CTi’s own frontend visualisation layer for the platform.

The real world clinical data that will power the first visualisations in Optex will be used to manage operational efficiency, patient safety and collaboration in the testing of new medicines.

ClinTex’ goal is to use data to remove bottlenecks and barriers in medicine development and reduce the time and cost involved in bringing a new medicine to market (currently 10 to 15 years and $3billion+ from lab to market).

Optex will be an invaluable tool for our mission, and we hope many others in a similar position within the ICP & blockchain community and beyond.

How did the need for Optex arise?

During the development of CTi’s first apps, CTi-OEM and CTi-PDA, ClinTex found ourselves limited by pharmaceutical industry standard (fully centralized) tools such as Spotfire, Tableau and Qlikview for our frontend requirements. Such applications are very limited in their ability to be tailored to specific use cases such as clinical trials.

During initial development we found that we were constrained in how current tools could display complex visuals such as those derived from CTi’s data insights. The manual resolve of which drives cost (something contradictory to the ClinTex mission) and often offers a result that is sub-optimal for clinical trial needs.

What is the Internet Computer?

The Internet Computer is a blockchain that enables developers, organizations, and entrepreneurs to build and deploy secure, autonomous, and tamper-proof canisters, an evolution of smart contracts.

Think of the Internet Computer as a globally accessible, public blockchain for running smart contracts at web speed, that can serve interactive web content to users. This makes ICP the perfect venue for hosting an application such as Optex.

Will this affect the delivery of the rest of the CTi apps from ClinTex?

While there will be some additional work to port over CTi-OEM and CTi-PDA to Optex for the visualization layer, we expect the primary roadmap to be largely unaffected.

When will Optex be delivered?

Optex v1 will be delivered before the end of Q2 next year. As usual, ClinTex will provide regular development updates here on Medium and through all our social media channels, so do stay tuned.
